Additionally, to those who already feel that our killing and eating other animals is morally wrong, this legend highlights the complete disregard most humans hold for the rights of animals and the increasingly inhumane conditions under which food animals are raised. Our continual progress in understanding and manipulating the genetic codes of plants and animals has fueled debate over the environmental and health concerns raised by the creation and growth of transgenic food crops and the marketing of food products derived from animals that have been given artificial hormones. It's easy to see why this legend has suddenly made such a strong resurgence. Earlier versions of the tale featured six-legged chickens ("How do they taste?" "Dunno no one's ever been able to catch one") or birds so plumped by chemicals that their gigantic breasts made it impossible for them to keep their balance well enough to walk. Versions of this legend have been circulating for decades now, as indicated by the e-mail's reference to Kentucky Fried Chicken's "recent" name change, an event that took place in 1991. It appears to be KFC's turn in the spotlight again (their original legend about the fried rat having become a bit long in the tooth), and they have become the proud owners of a legend intended to reflect another modern fear: genetically engineered food: Every fast food chain gets its own urban legend these days, from claims of worms in McDonald's hamburgers to roaches in Taco Bell tacos to snakes in Burger King's ball pits, we're determined to demonize corporate purveyors of cheap, industrial food products.

148 on Rolling Stone's list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. In 2004, the Janis Joplin version of this song was ranked No. Joplin's version topped the charts to become her only number one single and only the second posthumous number one single in rock & roll history (the first was " (Sittin' on) the Dock of the Bay" by Otis Redding). Kristofferson, however, did not know she had covered it until after her death (the first time he heard it was the day after she died). Kristofferson had sung the song for Joplin, and singer Bob Neuwirth taught it to her. Janis Joplin also covered the song for inclusion on her Pearl album only a few days before her death in October 1970. The song was later included on a Statler Brothers album, and was not released as a single. The Reids say there were no hard feelings, and were happy about Miller's success with the song. In his introduction, Lightfoot referred to the Miller version and said he intended to record it himself "the way it should be done." In a 2008 autobiography, Don Reid and Harold Reid of the Statler Brothers say Kristofferson promised it to them, but when they later inquired about recording it, they learned Miller had already cut the song. Lightfoot sang the song after a detailed tribute to Kris Kristofferson in a CBC broadcast from the summer 1969 Charlottetown Festival. Roger Miller was the first artist to have a hit with the song, peaking with it at No. 3 Chart positions (Roger Miller version). I’ll use estimated MSRP prices to see if the system I’ve assembled for this project is in the ballpark for what Paul recommends. I also have several other DACs in frequent rotation, including the Khadas Tone2 Pro, Orchard Audio Pecan Pi Streamer, SMSL Sanskrit 10th V2, and various products from iFi Audio. Its objective performance and build quality match the Topping Pre90 preamp. My primary DAC is the amazing X16 from Gustard. Roon Bridge software on VitOS enables streaming to any USB attached DACs. The source components for this build include a VitOS for Raspberry Pi 4 Model B from Silent Angel, which functions as a network audio transport (Ethernet in, USB out). Topping Pre90/Ext90 preamp + Gustard X16 DAC Sourcesīeing a computer audiophile, all of my sources are various DACs or streamers with integrated DACs. These are essential factors to consider when assembling a system. This amplifier’s gain is only 16.8 dB, making an active preamp a must. Later models of this amplifier claim an input impedance of 44kΩ however, mine is part of the original release, so it’s a relatively low 5kΩ, limiting preamp choices a bit. The short cable length maximizes the damping factor (rated at > 550). These amplifiers are so small and light (21 ounces or 600 grams) that they can be installed by hanging them from the speaker terminals via provided 1 ft cables. Orchard Audio BOSC (Starkrimson®) monoblock amplifiers will drive the Valorem monitors with up to 150 watts of clean GaN Class D power. I’ve selected component separates that are physically small, if not tiny, yet big on performance. Size is important here because dedicated listening rooms tend to be smaller most audiophiles don’t have space for hulking home theater subwoofers! Amplification When I say “small,” think roughly a 1 ft cube. This is especially true of small “audiophile” subs like the 3000 Micros. I’ve found that optimally integrated subs almost always add more to the listening experience than what they cost. While bass output and extension are satisfactory from the Valorems, I am fortunate to have a pair of SVS 3000 Micro subwoofers that I’ll integrate to add room pressurization. Sonically, I feel they are competitive with other loudspeakers near this price point. So, my best guess is that the Valorem Audio Primum monitors will retail for a little over $3k/pair ( edit: actually, about $1,800/pair, selling direct–no dealer network). To make any money at all, the designer must mark them up by ~3x the materials cost, and that cost is usually around 40% of MSRP. While I don’t know what these loudspeakers will retail for, the total cost in parts, including crossovers and enclosures, is probably about $450 for the pair ( edit: actually, a little over $600). These largish monitors are composed of a Scanspeak Discovery 18W/8434G-00 mid-woofer and ScanSpeak Discovery R2604/8320 Ring Radiator tweeter. I’m going with a pair of 7 in 2-ways from a relatively unknown company called Valorem Audio. As such, 2-way monitors and towers tend to work better than large multi-way systems as the latter type typically requires greater distances for all drivers to seamlessly integrate. The 10 ft width of my room dictates a relatively close listening position. Next to the room, loudspeakers have the most significant impact on sound Paul recommends allocating 50% to 70% of the components budget to speakers for Serious systems. My temperament is more on this hobby’s cheap and cheerful side, but I am setting up a dedicated 2-channel listening room, so this system fits Paul’s “Serious” range. Paul describes three types of systems, Casual ($1k – $5k), Serious ($3k – $30k), and Whacky ($25k – $50k and up). While it is true that the room is the most critical component in any audio system, it doesn’t do much on its own! Before I get into setting up the grid and describing what I’m learning from the listening tests, I thought you might like to know about the system I’ve put together for this exercise. The hydrocarbon combustion reaction releases heat energy and is an example of an exothermic reaction. Below is a hydrocarbon combustion animation showing the net reaction that occurs when methane combines with oxygen.ĬH 4 + 2O 2 → CO 2 + 2H 2O Heat Energy ( Enthalpy) Methane releases its chemical energy by undergoing hydrocarbon combustion. However, this means that it is also a significant contributor to climate change since this methane produces a fair amount of the carbon dioxide that humans emit into the atmosphere.īelow is a table of some of the basic properties of methane. It can even provide energy for transportation. Methane combustion (see simulation at bottom of page) provides a significant fraction of the world's primary energy, and is used for home heating, cooking food, heating water, and electrical generation. It has a shorter atmospheric lifetime than CO 2, at 12 years, but this is "balanced" by the fact that it is more effective at trapping heat than CO 2, as methane has a GWP ( Global warming potential) of 21. Methane is also a greenhouse gas, like carbon dioxide (CO 2). Īt typical temperatures and pressures it is a gas and makes up around 95% of the content of liquefied natural gas, and around 80-90% of natural gas. Methane is the main hydrocarbon component of natural gas, which is a type of fossil fuel. As a hydrocarbon, it can undergo hydrocarbon combustion which gives off heat. Methane is an alkane with the chemical formula CH 4. Space filling model of methane the white spheres represent hydrogen atoms and the black spheres represent carbon atoms. If desired, the nonroad CO2 equivalent methane emissions may be estimated outside the model by multiplying the CH 4 output by its GWP.Figure 1. However, nitrous oxide and CO 2 equivalent are not modelled for nonroad equipment. Methane emissions are modeled as a function of total hydrocarbons. Nonroad atmospheric CO 2 is computed from BSFC in the same way as onroad CO 2 is computed from onroad fuel consumption. tons will depend on the units selected on the “General Output” panel. Whether this is grams, kilograms, pounds, or U.S. The input for this value is in lbs/bhp-hr, but engine population and activity are applied within MOVES, so MOVES outputs the total mass of fuel per day for the given engine category in the nation or selected county. The equation and GWP values used by MOVES to calculate CO 2 equivalent emissions are documented in Section 4.2 of the Greenhouse Gas and Energy Consumption Rates for Onroad Vehicles MOVES3.įor nonroad equipment, fuel consumption is modelled as “Brake Specific Fuel Consumption” (BSFC). For more information on GWPs, see EPA’s website, Understanding Global Warming Potentials. Note, these GWP values have not been updated recently. Nitrous oxide (N 2O) has a GWP value of 298. In MOVES:ĬO 2 has a GWP value of 1 (the reference). If selected, MOVES will estimate total "CO 2 equivalent" emissions for onroad vehicles by multiplying CH 4 and N 2O emissions by their global warming potential (GWP) and adding them to the atmospheric CO 2 estimate to calculate the CO 2 equivalent. MOVES does not estimate hydrofluorocarbon (HFC) emissions. In addition, MOVES models onroad vehicle emissions of methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N 2O), which also contribute to climate change. We refer to this CO 2 as "atmospheric" and calculate it based on the total carbon in the fuel. While small portion of the fuel used in the vehicle is initially released to the atmosphere as unburned fuel or as carbon monoxide (CO), we assume that eventually all of the released carbon will convert to CO 2 in the atmosphere (i.e., the “oxidation fraction” equals one). MOVES estimates only the direct emissions from the vehicle and does not model the upstream emissions or energy consumption from producing the fuel. The CO 2 equation used by MOVES and the carbon content of each fuel are documented in Section 4.1 of the Greenhouse Gas and Energy Consumption Rates for Onroad Vehicles MOVES3. Then using the fuel carbon content, MOVES calculates the CO 2 emitted from burning the fuel in the vehicle. MOVES calculates the energy it takes to operate an onroad vehicle based on energy consumption rates as explained in the technical reports Greenhouse Gas and Energy Consumption Rates for Onroad Vehicles MOVES3 (pdf) (November 2020, EPA-420-R-20-015) and Exhaust Emission Rates for Heavy-Duty Onroad Vehicles in MOVES3 (pdf) (November 2020, EPA-420-R-20-018). Constant adjustments along with navigating and flying the aircraft put a heavy and continuous workload on the pilot. At each phase of taking off, gaining altitude, cruise, lowering altitude and landing, the pilot work load can be heavy as the pilot manually makes changes to the aircraft such as balancing the fuel between six tanks to keep the cg of the aircraft in check, the inlets to the engines based on speed, temperature, altitude and flight modes. It had a unique bleed from the compressor to the afterburner which gave increased thrust at high speeds. The J58 was a single-spool turbojet with an afterburner. While the engine RPM did slow down at maximum speed (up to 90), it never stopped, and always generated enough power for electrical systems, pressurization, hydraulics and any other needs. Your assumption that it has no moving parts is wrong. The other issue is that the Blackbird pilot workload was heavy during flight. The Pratt & Whitney J58 (company designation JT11D-20) was a jet engine that powered the Lockheed A-12, and subsequently the YF-12 and the SR-71 aircraft. The SR-71 used the P&W J58, which is full of moving parts, and works very similar to a typical jet engine. Able to fly at three times the speed of sound. During pre-flight, the panels were arraigned to work left to right making the cockpit ergonomics a bit easier for the pilot to go through the check list. Flying the SR-71 Blackbird: In the Cockpit On a Secret Operational Mission by Col. Had the panels not been redesigned, going through that check list would have been difficult and probably lead to mistaken settings. First, when prepping the aircraft for take off, there is a long check list of items to be covered. Born in 1950s thinking and 1960s technology, the SR-71 was nonetheless one of the most advanced aircraft regardless of decade. There are a few things most people do not know about operating the SR-71. The SR-71 was used in a program to study ways of reducing sonic booms or over pressures that are heard on the ground much like sharp thunderclaps when an aircraft exceeds the speed of sound. You can use Auto White balance, but may see colour shifts between frames and some photographers prefer to set white balance manually to tungsten - makes warm lights and the night sky look more blue.ģ. Set the ISO speed between 200-1600, higher speeds makes the star trails brighter but also adds more noise, you may have to do some test photos to determine the optimum exposure for a single frame. This photo was taken with a 24 mm F1.4 Canon lens wide open at ISO 800, each exposure was about 10 seconds and the total time I photographed the series was about 15 minutes.īASIC STEPS To Make STAR TRAIL PHOTOGRAPHSġ. Star Trails and Aurora over Pontoon Lake, NWT. The length of the star trails depends on the total exposure time of the series of photos. However, if we stack the images and blend them together using a "Lighten blend mode" the parts of the image that are black or dark become transparent and the lighter pixels are added or combined with the previous images creating the appearance of long star trails. If you were to just stack multiple images one on top of the other the resulting image would become very dark. To avoid this problem it is possible to take a series of short exposures (6 sec to several minutes) and then stack them together. With digital cameras using long exposures of 20 minutes to several hours (depending on the camera make and model) often results in over exposed pictures, lots of digital noise or red glow around the edges. With film based cameras it was easy, you set up the camera on a tripod and used the B or Bulb mode setting and exposed the film for several minutes to several hours. Anyone can take these type of photographs of stars provided you can see the stars and you get to a location without too much light pollution. Star trails can create surrealistic looking photographs. Please be aware I am doing this to procrastinate doing more line edits for Fragments of Magic. I'm not explaining any of them tho so you're safe) My ultimate end dream would be for Fragments of Magic to be turned into an Anime series or an animated movie! You can find my art on my art account (be warned there are spoilers jsyk. I collect Art Books, Pictures of Clouds, Ceramic Unicorns, Enamel Pins and Fan Art of my cast from Fragments. I'm completely self taught artist and have been drawing since I was 11 (Although only seriously drawing/improving when I was 21 ish so about 10 Years now)Īnd I am 100% down to gush about any and all of the things mentioned above. I am a Stay at Home Mom, I've started trying to get back into reading and successfully won my goodreads challenge last year and read 36 books which was a drastically huge difference from years before! I love Anime, Drawing art of my characters and Video games and when I'm not reading I'm usually doing one of those things. So stay tuned for more news on it soon! Again as I've said a few times I'm pushing for a May 2023 release and am close to picking an actual date to be the final be all end all date ♥ So in 2020 I set out to finally make that happen and by the end of it I had a draft and a direction! 20 were full of learning and growth on how to write/be a writer and figuring out exactly the story I wanted to tell and I am excited to say it's in it's last stages and I will be glad to let this one run free in the world soon. Hey y'all! My name is Chelsea and I am an artist and writer on my way to self publish my first book in mid/late May of this year called Fragments of Magic! Fragments (as I call it for shorthand) has been in development since late 2016/early 2017 and was SUPPOSED to be a webcomic but I decided that writing the story out would be faster overall. Youĭon’t have to prove anything to anyone.New year means new introduction (featuring my PFP art ♥) Something that brings you joy or worth your time, that’s okay too. And if you’ve decided that drawing is not And being good or bad at drawing doesn’t make youīetter or worse person. It may be slower than you wish but you’re moving forward and You try your best to learn something new and it’s good. We can be our harshest critics sometimes. The more your knowledge base the more information you have to play with, to mix something to create something new.īe kind to yourself. Learn new programs or new traditional techniques. Digital 2D and 3D art, traditional art, mixed, etc. There are so many styles and medium to try. It takes a lot of time to be good at something.īe curious. Compare the first drawing to the last one and you’ll see the progress.īe patient. The first drawing of something you haven’t draw before probably would suck. So being an artist is all about the journey and you should learn to love and enjoy the feeling of the on-going adventure, because I don’t think there’s the ultimate end goal there. It’s very rarely a person knows exactly what they want to be. Some would be a better storyteller because that’s what their passion is about. Some artists would improve faster just because they have the ability to learn faster. Each person is different and has a different speed of absorbing the new information. It’s hard to not compare yourself to others but for your own mental health you should try to stop it. If you know how something works you can draw it from different angles. Use you brain along with your eyes to learn things. Even a little bit of new knowledge is making you better than you were before learning it. Don’t get discouraged if you can’t memorize things as quickly as you hoped so. If you don’t like studying and learning stuff, well, you better develop the love for it, because the ability to learn is what will determine the speed of your improving as artist. You get a much better sense of where you are in the book. There’s always a running total of chapter and overall word counts to hand. If you tend to lose the bigger picture when you’re writing – like discovering you’ve just hammered out a chapter of 10K words when all the others are half the length – this is a handy feature. If you don’t need that, discard!Ī more practical advantage is the overview of chapter structure you’re getting as you construct the book in Vellum. This can give some writers a visual and motivational kick. No longer does your manuscript look the same as some intern’s crappy MS Word document. You can choose a book style (never fear, it can always be changed later!) and actually see that pretty paperback (or ebook) chapter heading taking shape in the preview pane as you write the first paragraph. It’s certainly satisfying to write in Vellum and see the book outline take shape from the start. Namely…should you write your next book directly in Vellum? Or still do it in Microsoft Word and then copy it across? The Pros of Writing in Vellum Rather, I’m going to assume you’ve taken the Vellum plunge and are now staring down your first big decision. So I’m not here to discuss whether this Mac-only software is worth the investment. In a world of endless software options, it’s a refreshing fact that Vellum is the universally acknowledged winner when it comes to self-publishing.Īssuming we’re not talking about highly complex layouts like hardback DIY manuals, I’d say you’re onto a winner with Vellum. |
